Radio DJ and television presenter Trevor Nelson appears as the first guest on series 10 of the award-winning podcast Fuelling Around.

Nelson, who has been a regular on the airwaves and TV screens for more than four decades, is on the pod to discuss his love of all things four-wheeled, including the Mercedes-Benz 280SL, also dubbed the Pagoda.

The 61-year-old, who hosts a show on BBC Radio 2 on Monday to Friday afternoons, is best known for his stints on BBC Radio 1 and Kiss FM, as well as presenting on TV for the BBC, Channel 4, Channel 5 and music network MTV in the 2000s.

Trevor Nelson tells funny story about Jamiroquai owning ‘his car’

During his chat with the boys, Nelson detailed his love of the iconic Mercedes model.

“I fell in love with the TR6 first because I loved the shape of them,” Nelson revealed.

“My mate bought a Triumph Dolomite when we were at college, which we pushed more than we sat in. The Stag was definitely the local aspirational car in my area.

“But I fell in love with the 280SL. I can’t remember when but I had a desire from the early 90s. I just had this thing of: ‘Oh man if I can ever get that car’. I was just one dimensional about it.

“That’s the car, if I could ever have one car, that’s the car. At that time I was driving a red (Vauxhall) Astra, it was my first company car, and then a Jeep Cherokee which was great in a straight line, but couldn’t take a corner.

“And then I fell in love with this car (280SL) and the first person I saw driving one was Jamiroquai. I was working in Holland Park. I saw him driving a white, I think it was a cream or white one.

“He got his deal, he was Jay Kay, Jamirquai, and the crux of it is, I played his record first on national radio on Kiss FM before he was signed, ‘When you gonna learn’. So I was his number one champion.

“Then I see him cruising in this car. I remember thinking: ‘He’s got my car!’ I was going mad. ‘He’s got my car!’. Honestly I was losing it inside my head. But it also reconfirmed how cool that car is.”
