Motorsport commentator Ben Edwards appears on the award-winning podcast Fuelling Around to discuss all things Formula 1.
Edwards got his break in motorsport as a mechanic for Formula Ford in 1982 before becoming a racing driver, and eventually a commentator alongside Tiff Needell at the BBC.
The 58-year-old, who is best known for his work for F1TV’s coverage, sat down with Jason Plato and Dave Vitty to give his views on a host of matters involving F1 and his love of cars.
Ben Edwards ponders whether Ferrari were right to sign Lewis Hamilton
During his chat with the boys, Edwards discussed Lewis Hamilton’s excellent performance at the Qatar Grand Prix on Sunday, but questions whether Ferrari have made the right decision to sign him, rather than going for a younger driver.
“It was a shame he didn’t get a final podium for Mercedes in his last run, but it was still so impressive in getting past George (Russell) like that, it was fantastic and a great way to end it,” Edwards declared.
“He’s been through a bit of a tough patch hasn’t he, in this last part of the year, it has been a tough patch. He’s not been happy with the feel of the car, you just feel he’s not had that confidence in himself, but suddenly there he was back to his normal self.
“I was commentating earlier this year at the British Grand Prix when he won, and that really was special because in the wet, he is astonishing and he still is, and that was part of him winning at Silverstone.
“The question will be how he gets on with (Charles) Leclerc and how the combination goes at Ferrari. That is going to be something that everybody’s going to be interested in for the start of next year.
“Ferrari fans love seeing new youngsters coming through and being dominant if they can. I do think, and there is plenty of support for Lewis, but I do think there is a bit of a mix (among the fans), and some people are feeling ‘well Lewis has been at the top for a long, long time, surely now he’s getting towards the end of his career, why do we need him in Ferrari now? Is he going to be the right guy?’
“Commercially I think it’s been a very good thing for Ferrari to do that, but from a fan point of view I think there will be a few questions. So that will put him under a little bit of pressure.”
